Status Maine LD 1853, Pit Mining and The Political Strangeness of Maine GovernmentPolitics; n. A strife of interests masquerading as a contest of principles. The conduct of public affairs for private advantage.” Ambrose Bierce (1841-1914). The Devil’s Dictionary, p. 101, 1911, Dover edition, 1958. Autocracy; (n) dictatorship, tyranny. Democracy; (n) equality. Union; (n) unification, joining together, unity. Friday, April 13, 2012Voted to Pass LD1853, Maine Legislators Support Pit Mining and J.D. Irving Ltd’s History of Environmental Crime, Pollution Offenses and Abandonment of Responsibilities
This is more than just an inconvenience endured through pit mining in Maine. J.D. Irving Ltd. has sufficiently warned us with their environmental history, yet, Maine legislators came to their own fantastical conclusions voting to pass LD1853 with their apparent insolence, shallowness, frivolity of nonsense, greed and obvious personal prejudices of their own. Unforgivably, supporting the exclusion of the Land Use Regulation Committee’s (LURC) involvement in this decision and in doing so, supporting the exclusion of Maine people from what should be a fundamental responsibility of any just government through regulatory environmental fairness and equality in decision-making. Undoubtedly, shrouding our environmental future with the same loss the Canadian government and their people have known for far too many years while doing business with J.D. Irving Ltd. Oddly, Rep John Martin, the author of LD1853, claimed he saw ‘jobs’ in the creation of this bill for an area long suffering from joblessness and poverty. However, as of this writing, this moment, the only poverty I see in Maine is the poverty-stricken souls’ of the Maine Legislators who authored and supported LD1853. Kindest all…. Emily
Constructive ContemptLD 1853An Act To Improve Environmental Oversight and Streamline Permitting for Mining Laws in Maine Submitted by Representitive John Martin, D-Eagle Lake and Co-sponsored by Senator Roger Sherman, R-Houlton, and Senator Troy Jackson, D-Allagash While I’m always surprised when I find myself in the comfortable position of disagreeing, writing about difficult things is still done with difficulty for me. Today is no exception. One would not need to probe too deeply to know my mining prejudices. I am of the belief that pit mining is undoubtedly the most grotesque indignity to earth known to humanity. Perpetuated, by those incapable of fidelity to the environment, unless seduced through environmental mutilation.…. Trafficking UntruthsI”ve no reason to doubt Martin’s statement that; ”he kept the environment in mind when drafting the bill so that streams, lakes, natural habitats and other resources around Bald Mountain would not be harmed.”
Nevertheless, the truth is, this is about basic intrinsic uncertainty, about the unknowable, and about what cannot be foreseen, complicated by considerable suggestive evidence that even with the overseeing by the EPA and DEP, neither, have absolute control over what we factually know mining is capable of doing through the natural process. Cyanide can convert to other toxic forms and just as cyanide dissolves gold from rock, it releases harmful metals as well. United States Geological Survey and Behind Golds Glitter, Torn Lands and Pointed Questions “Much of those masses of disturbed rock, exposed to the rain and air for the first time, are also the source of mining’s multibillion-dollar environmental time bomb. Sulfides in that rock will react with oxygen, making sulfuric acid. That acid pollutes and it also frees heavy metals like cadmium, lead and mercury, which are harmful to people and fish even at low concentrations. The chain reaction can go on for centuries. Some metal mines, including gold mines, have become the near-equivalent of nuclear waste dumps that must be tended in perpetuity. Hard-rock mining generates more toxic waste than any other industry in the United States, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The agency estimated last year that the cost of cleaning up metal mines could reach $54 billion.” ( the cost of gold, 30 tons an ounce) Once catastrophe strikes through aquifers and various other known poisons caused by mineral mining into the earths soil, water and air, though they may eventually be stopped or, contained, if caught, they can do nothing to reverse the devastating affects. I wonder how Martin reconciles his bill with the issue of dewatering (aquifers) which should be of enormous concern. The process of drawing down water in keeping mines dry in order to mine them, pulls water from water sources for hundreds of square miles. Not only are the sources it pulls from, rivers, tributary’s, ponds, lakes, etc., negatively impacted but, the forests, flora and fauna surrounding the mines as well. The effects are slow but cumulative. Over time, though unnoticeable, the surrounding forest will most likely know its own dying off from lack of nourishment. The natural process of evolution for the forest is halted, and what once took years to exist in its present state, dies. While the DEP might have us believe these forests can come back, and perhaps on a small scale they may, the process of mining lasts a matter of years, and even after closure and reclamation, aquifers and the surrounding area continue to be affected. While mining companies may use the argument that the aquifers will recover when mining has ceased, all indications are , it could be to late for aquatic life and forest land and life dependent upon them for balance of life, and ultimately, survival. They may also wish to convince us that; modern technology allows appropriate monitoring but, numerous reports state findings that the technology is often flawed. Sadly, little is known about the process, though more aggressive study has begun. I am unable to discern whether Martin and his supporters pulsate with dishonesty, self-deception or, the kind of desperation that causes recklessness. But Martin’s attempt at qualifying his rushing of LD 1853 comes across as inauthentic and artificial. Authenticity takes time. Furthermore, the suddenness and hurriedness of this bill infers an intentional act to disorient the public through loss of equilibrium by withholding information that might create a much needed balance through the fairness of disclosure, for the natural state of Maine, and our culture. In the end, today, I am left with only one personal thought; there can apparently be ignorance, even among the educated. Kindest, Emily
Some Previously Irreverent Thoughts.(irreverent; adj. deficient in veneration or respect ) The Agnostic LePage, LURC, Taxes, Eagles and the Marine CorpWhy we need LURC….
While no commission is without fault, LURC without a doubt, has carried a weighty responsibility over the years, and done so with integrity that might not have existed otherwise, allowing a fairness, rightness and lawful integration into this state and our environment. We cannot be ubiquitous, none of us, making their presence instrumental in keeping Maine citizens informed with respect to projects and issues concerning us all at some point and permitting us the ability to place reasonable confidence in what might otherwise, be unknown for the majority of us. Without them, I can assure you, most especially, with the example we have witnessed to date from a belligerent governor lacking communication skills, who has done nothing but waste our time while blatantly disrespecting the people of Maine, his legislators, our health, our children, and our environment, which seemingly leads his activity in all his conduct, his administration will be completely inaccessible to flexible discussion. Leaving Maine’s culture and the environment vulnerable and susceptible to failures of all types and subjected, no doubt, to undignified influences, from the individual next door, to big business, and the potential for environmental crime… LURC ‘s existence assures us, at the very least, a significant amount of environmental security without speculation and deviation from accuracy due to poor reasoning, carelessness, or misconceptions. While LePage’s record to date offers us nothing more than systematic chaos. It is merely another attempt by LePage to chip away at the power and the will of Maine’s people. Symbol of the Corps: “The Eagle, Globe and Anchor emblem has been part of the uniform since 1868 and became the official emblem of the Marine Corps in 1955. The eagle with spread wings represents our proud nation. The globe points to worldwide presence. The anchor stands for naval tradition. Together, they represent a dedication to service in the air, on land and at sea. The Eagle, Globe and Anchor emblem is presented to recruits at the end of Recruit Training, symbolizing that they have earned the title “United States Marine.” Thank you USMC for the membership and your service….and welcome! Emily Paul LePage, Maine’s Vulgar Little ManI think we place expectations on our Governor whether we chose him or not, with reasonable confidence that some sort of desired outcome will be accomplished, or at the very least, worked toward…When we are forced to witness the failure of a Governor it usually isn’t so blatant, resembling something more like passive abandonment… In the case of Paul LePage, it’s rather shocking when we are confronted with the truth, someone who seemingly resembles life, only to find out his brain is destitute of living things. Paul LePage is, without question, Maine’s vulgar little man, offensive and apparently loaded with spontaneously toxic hostility, who orders as his only way to achieve, and who, it would seem, has a desire to fail Maine’s people. While LePage may think he is infallible, he certainly is not. No man ever is. Especially to those who reject him. That rejection is a certainty. His own incompetence will ultimately explain his conceitedly dull lack of common sense, defining him by his own ignorance. No doubt, if failure is his goal, he will surely attain it. Most likely, remaining unrivaled in the future, as the one lacking anything resembling human intellect, and do so deservingly… Emily (on Em’s Page my response to your emails) Also: Excellent read Click here: Bill Nemitz: Latest LePage order a piece of work | The Portland Press Herald / Maine Sunday Telegram And… Carlos F. If you could employ an associate who pretends to be sympathetic to the unions” cause to physically attack you (or even use a firearm against you), you could discredit the public unions. Currently, the media is painting the union protest as a democratic uprising and failing to mention the role of the DNC and umbrella union organizations in the protest. Stone Brain and a Stooge, Emily’s Conservation Blog MaineFor today’s hallucinogenic corn smut, I give you Maine’s Governor LePage with a uniformed (he has plain-clothes protection already) state trooper outside his door for no apparent reason other than, the “perceived mood of the nation.” Huh? Mood of the nation? Could I be any more unmoved by the need for such tedious drama from the new breed of state governors, who apparently lacking the aptitude to grasp their own truth find it necessary to revert back to the behavior they’re most comfortable with, like pigs rolling in the shit excrement of their own deceit and blame. Oh, the woe of being the emotionally sniveling likes of the LePage’s and Walker’s of the world. Honestly, all this impressively confirms to me is, yet another typically mundane uncompromising defense tactic while attempting, (once again) to create more separation and conflict from the fallacy’s within their own minds. I’d venture to say, these guys and the “perceived” threat to them is no more than their own deviously manufactured response to their own dogmatic failures compounded by the constant need to wrongly place blame on everyone and everything because they knowingly proved to be incapably unremarkable men, who can no longer fool the people but, have not yet come to terms with their own acceptance. The Intellectually Maimed…….March 9, 2011: I see the Maine Heritage Policy Center’s intellectually maimed, Tarren Bragdon, couldn’t keep himself from tripping over his own mental obstructions while attempting to throttle readers with his miserably predictable sarcasm in a recent news article. (again) Offering such dull responses to Chris Quint, executive director of the Maine State Employees Association’s concerns, Bragdon, offered his usual absurdly disorganized babble in response to Quint’s comments by calling them, “crazy notions and conspiracy theories.” I always get the impression when reading the penetratingly thoughtless reponses of Bragdon, Walker, LePage and the likes of them, that, whenever one eats, they all swallow…. Wow. Dudes got issues. Take a minute . Read Buffalo Beast Dialog with Wisconsin’s Walker My thoughts……What does it all really mean…..
Unions exist because there was a need for humane treatment in the workplace. Treatment free from the polluting touch of politics and the selfish self-interest we are witnessing now from the likes of politicians like Wisconsin’s governor, who, while embracing the old order, may well be proving once again, why unions in this country have intrinsic value. Unions have always been instinctual in the preservation and mutual advancement for the common good of their union members, and as such, are without question, as legitimate and as natural to the movement and advancement in this country as any capital organization, or industry. No organization knows better than unions, the importance of stability in government. Nor does any organization know better, that a great part of that stability comes through allowing a voice concerning our working conditions and wages. They understand, it is through logic and the righteousness of the workers cause, that collective bargaining has allowed a neutrality of voice between the employer and employee that fails to exist otherwise, without it, we have a system that fails to thrive. That failure, is the beginning of what we are seeing in its rawest form, as Wisconsin’s governor fails to acknowledge the right to be heard That neutral voice of collective bargaining is what removed the worker from commodity status, and allowed the spirit of the American worker, literally, to flourish in all aspects of life, industry and capital. Rolling back time with the Taft act, removing the voice of neutrality from the working class reduces the American worker to a commodity and returns them once again, to the potential of employers greedy for capital, to use them as such, seeking to obtain them at the lowest working wage, and lends itself only to an unsettling and damaging divisiveness among our working class and the breeding of resentment among workers and between employers and employees. No, no, organized labor is not the problem. Honestly, can there be any doubt there is something deviously and inherently wrong with the disintegrating influence of our political leadership today, allowed to operate a system knowing absolutely nothing about it or, economic reformation. I don’t think so. Taking wages from the working people in order to overcome economic crisis is illogical and has proven repeatedly to be a fallacy of economics…break the working class people and you break commerce. The strange politics we are seeing of late will only feed strange economics, not correct them. Continue reading my thoughts …Autocracy, Democracy, Unions, Collective Bargaining and the American Worker-Emily’s Conservation Blog Maine A note here on what the non-union worker needs to understand: Non-unionized employers will usually match union wages by 90% in an effort to keep unions out of their firms. Weakening of organized workers could also hurt the wages of the non-union worker as union workers wages are the standard for all other wages and benefits. LePage, Demeritt, the Antagonist and the Reckoning…
Maine is overwhelmingly in trouble with this administration. Their actions grown out of desperation rather than discriminating standards, are careless, misleading and credulously incompetent. We needed some form of stability, instead we have a guy literally inciting discontent among our citizenry and repealing chemical legislation because they don’t like the “attitudes.” Now we’re forced to view before us, something looking more like a convulsion of humanity where a caring governor should be, while he single handedly attempts to devour the state of Maine’s environment and its people because they don’t like the attitudes. Good Lord….. There seems to be something wrongly primitive about this governor and his staffs decision making process.…Lepage and his administrations wish for unnecessary repeals (the spokesman states they have no evidence business is not being done in Maine because of chemical bans) is only exacerbated by his and his administrations repeated disrespect for the people of Maine. It is increasingly difficult to make excuses for this administration, so I’ll not do so. Nor will I consider any longer that this is an administration that is ’misunderstood’, made obvious by Demeritt’s recent comments. Someone made the comment to me recently that LePage was at least “consistent”…The thing is, earning a reputation of consistency is only flattering if that consistency reaches out in fairness….embracing all and giving all an adequate voice. LePage and his staff have not only fallen deaf, but beyond that, apparently foster some deep hostility toward everyone and everything Maine.. LePages spokesman also makes that clear with the indication that the LePage administration will “punish” Maine’s people with repeals because they don’t like “the attitudes.” It’s looking more and more like LePage and his people are using his term as a “reckoning” of some sort….but for what….and why…only time will tell.
